ABOUT THE FOOD PANTRY

The Freeman Food Pantry works in conjunction with Feeding South Dakota to help eliminate hunger in our community. Every single week, Feeding South Dakota assists in providing temporary food assistance to approximately 21,000 hungry individuals and families in our state and our BackPack Program gives food every weekend to over 5,200 kids who otherwise might go hungry.

Hunger in South Dakota

  • 14.6% of individuals live at or below the poverty line.
  • One out of every eight individuals in South Dakota is food insecure.
  • One out of every five children is at risk of going hungry.
  • Nearly 50% of the individuals served by Feeding South Dakota are children and infants.
  • Three counties in South Dakota are the poorest in the United States.
  • South Dakota has eight of the nation’s 30 poorest counties.
  • 40% of school-aged children in our state qualify for free and reduced meals.
  • 19.2% of people 50 or older in our state live below the poverty line.
  • Nearly 40% of those served by Feeding South Dakota are considered to be a working poor family.
  • The average monthly income for households served by Feeding South Dakota, and our partner agencies, is $970.00.

Impact of Feeding South Dakota

  • Over 190,000 people provided with food every year.
  • 13.5 million pounds of food distributed in Fiscal Year 2016, providing 11.3 million meals to families, seniors, and individuals across the state.
  • 5,200 packages of food are distributed to hungry children every week through our BackPack Program.
  • Our Food Pantry Program serves more than 90,000 people very year, providing 1.7 million meals to individuals in need.
  • 450,000 meals are provided to families living in high need, rural South Dakota through our Mobile Food Pantry Program.

COMMON FOOD NEEDS

in order to help those in our local communities
we rely on the support of those more fortunate. Below are some items that are always appreciated at the pantry.

  • Peanut Butter & Jelly
  • Cereal
  • Boxed Meals (i.e. Hamburger Helper, Tuna Helper)
  • Canned fruits
  • Canned vegetables (i.e. corn, peas, mixed vegetables)
  • Diapers
  • Baby Food and Dry Baby Formula (no glass,  opened,  or expired baby food)
